AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE: AZN) said Thursday that it would not be buying Pfizer, maker of the drug Prilosec, for $50 per share from the US drug giant.
The company said the deal could be reached in the US between AstraZeneca and Pfizer.
In the second quarter of 2011, AstraZeneca said it was "continuing to make substantial progress toward the development of generic versions of Prilosec" in Europe, and in the US and Japan.
The company said in a statement: "We are continuing to advance our efforts to bring generic versions of Prilosec to market with global markets and in the USA."
The deal was announced by AstraZeneca, Pfizer's maker of the company's cholesterol drug Lipitor, as part of a US transaction that would involve an option to buy the company, a spokesman for the company said.
The deal could come as no surprise to some analysts, who said AstraZeneca's acquisition of Pfizer would be "a major milestone for the company."
The announcement was made after a meeting of shareholders last week. The deal would be completed in the US on Wednesday, but it could take up to four weeks before it is completed, said Dr David Graham, an analyst at BSE.
"Given the potential to be impacted by this merger, the timing could be altered as early as next week or at least sooner," he said.
Pfizer's deal with AstraZeneca is expected to close in the second half of this year. In the meantime, the company is expected to have more information on its long-term plan to buy into the $80-a share market, which would be the largest in the world, with an estimated value of $30-a billion.
